What is PDF format

PDF (Portable Document Format) is not just a well-known and convenient format, but also the only one that has been a standard since 2008. One of the most popular types of electronic documents used by millions of users around the world. It was developed by Adobe Systems. It is versatile and allows you to save text data and fonts, tables, images and even layouts of the original documents. PDFs can contain not only images and text, but also clickable buttons, hyperlinks, embedded fonts, videos, and more. PDF is a cross-platform format used to store scanned paper documents: books, magazines, drawings.

All you need to open documents in this format is a viewer. There are a great many of them, both free and paid. a format viewer, Adobe Acrobat Reader, is often preinstalled on your computer if the device came with an operating system. If not, it is available for download from the Adobe Systems developer site and it's completely free. Because PDFs don't depend on the software that created them, nor on any particular operating system or hardware, they look the same no matter what device they're open on.

PDF format Well proven in publishing and printing, thanks to the ability to save composite layouts of text and graphics that can be easily edited, sorted and viewed, giving a visual representation of future material. A PDF file can be compared to paper prints, but in electronic form. Like a printed document, where nothing can be changed, a document converted to PDF is almost unalterable: neither a paragraph in the middle of a letter, nor a column can be inserted into a table.

PDF Advantages

  • Adobe Systems has a free reading program that is easy to download in a few clicks
  • PDF files are relatively small and do not take up much space
  • Security: firstly, the format is practically not susceptible to infection by viruses; secondly, it is possible to set a password and protect the file from prying eyes; thirdly, it is possible to use electronic printing, which helps authors to protect their rights

PDF Disadvantages

  • Absolutely all programs for editing PDF files are paid, free counterparts are read-only
  • PDF is a proprietary format of the Adobe company, and accordingly has a closed structure
  • PDFs are difficult to edit. Small changes can be made, but it is very difficult, if not impossible, to add blocks of text or images to an existing PDF

PDF Conversion

If you decide to convert PDF to another graphic format, you need to choose a new format. JPEG is suitable for use on websites and photo storage. PNG is better if you plan to edit the image. Also, PNG would be a better choice if your image has a transparent background. If you have an animated PDF file, then you need to convert it to a GIF to save the animation.
